Today during my hum drum working day, I got an email from Dave. I believe it read something to the effect of, "I have an owl on my desk", it certainly got my attention. Apparently this gorgeous Boreal Owl flew into the side of a moving car this morning out near the area where I work, the very kind people pulled over, ran and got him off the road before another car could hit him and took him to the Alaska Bird Observatory, where Dave works. The owl was stunned, but unhurt and he rested all day in a dark box on Dave's desk, mending from what must have been an shocking end to an evening hunting. After work Dave picked me and I rode to the spot near where he was found with the box resting in my lap, an occasional rustling from within. We carried him quite aways out from the road into the spruces and then removed him from the box. In the photo he is adjusting to the sunlight in my hands. Moments after this he pushed loose from my hands and flew away into the trees. Not many people get such a happy ending to their day. Good luck beautiful bird, I hope he found many voles to eat tonight.
